Background
Since the beginnings of skiing in Australia the activity has been undertaken by like minded people as a social and recreational activity. As time progressed, these groups formed themselves into clubs. At first these were clubs did not have ski lodges or huts but either visited the snow areas as social groups to stay first in the commercial establishments such as the Kosciusko Hotel at Diggers Creek and The Kosciusko Chalet at Charlotte Pass. As time moved on these clubs and groups looked to building their own places to stay in the snow and sought leases to build their own ski lodges or huts.
The ski clubs built in all four of the resort areas of Charlotte Pass, Guthega, Perisher Valley and Smiggin Holes; these all fall within the region covered by the Perisher Historical Society (PHS).
PHS has undertaken a project to document each of these ski club buildings profiling for each their beginnings, those involved in the design and construction and later extension or enhancement that may have taken place. This work is coordinated by PHS Committee Member Donald Johnston, a retired heritage architect, and is an enhancement to a work by Alistair Henchman and others.
From the initial foray of commercial development led by the NSW Government in the construction of the Kosciusko Hotel at Diggers Creek an array of facilities have been constructed. Below are listed the buildings constructed listed by ski resort or area – Charlotte Pass, Diggers Creek, Guthega, Perisher Valley, Sawpit Creek, Smiggin Holes and Wilsons Valley. The listings for each of these is divided into Club Lodges, Commercial Accommodation, Apartments, Churches, Hotels, On-snow Facilities and Staff Accommodation/Administration.
The Perisher Historical Society is currently undertaking a project to update the Heritage Study and in due course this will be attached to listed buildings.
